Watched 2 absolutely stonking films today - surely the best hangover cure in weeks!

First up, was Ridley Scott's epic American Gangster. Unusually - when starting the DVD - I was posed with the choice of watching the theatrical version, or watching an uncut unrated extended version. Obviously, we went for the latter. And it is very long indeed, but long in a most excellent 'we're-going-on-an-epic-gangster-story-arc-of-scarface-proportions' type way. And it looks amazing, like all of Scott's films. And it's two of the best actors of their generation in it (Washington, Crowe) backed up by a AAA supporting cast. Best crime film I've seen since Scorsese's The Departed - and based on a true story too.

In fact, the New York backdropand drugs corruption theme had my mind wandering into the land of GTA on more than one occassion, only in this case, it was the good guy doing most of the Grand thieving and bodding about the city. It honestly had me to thinking why couldn't a game like GTA be centred around a less dubious crime theme. The reverse even maybe? Wouldn't it be cool to play GTA from the perspective of the cops, A cop even, maybe trying to bust a drug ring? Sort of the a game of 'The Wire' ??? Surveillance, tailing, phone-tapping. Trying to find out who's the head of the organisation before gathering enough evidence to make the conviction stick.

Perhaps some form of mod is required here...

And before I digress completely, the 2nd - equally impressive - film (I just finished watching) of the weekend was Terry Gilliam's Tideland. Think Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas meets Pan's Labyrinth having a REALLY bad nightmare. Dark. As. Fuck. And not only because the film is supposedly shot from the point of view of the main child actor of the piece.

If you like Gilliam's stuff, then I'm sure you'll agree it's one of the best films he's ever made.
