Death of a Podcast Profile for: BobiRoka Added by BobiRoka, 13-10-2009
As some of you may know, over the past few months I've been spending much of what I consider my downtime (walking to and from the station, on the train, in the Gym) listening to Podcasts.

As some of you may know, over the past few months I've been spending much of what I consider my downtime (walking to and from the station, on the train, in the Gym) listening to Podcasts.
I know... welcome to last week etc, but I only got hold of an iPod about a year ago, so I didn't really know about the scope of such a phenomenon, let alone how to work the iTunes store, so this all relatively new to me.

Anyway, the first thing I did when I figured out how to work it all was to seek out the cream of gaming podcasts. First I found the Joystiq podcast, which succeeded - through sheer force of Justin McElroy's personality (we speak on Xbox Live/Twitter now) - in hooking me into the site's RSS feed. It's an awesome awesome way to spend time where you might otherwise be reading a book or listening to music or something else they used to do back in the day. Even if you're not into the latest multiplatform games to come out, these guys are steeped in knowledge, and they quite often come back and raise points that I may myself have mentioned, or heard mentioned... on certain occaisions when we might be in the same place. It's like being I fly on the wall of some of the greatest conversations about games, ever.

Anyway, the other one, comprising of several senior editorial people at 1up.com, just aired it's final episode due to the fact that main helmsman, Garnett Lee, is leaving for Shacknews and co-host (and ex-pat), John Davison (who used to work on PC Zone) is leaving for Gamepro.

Maybe it's just cos I could emphasise with the sentiments expressed towards the end of the extended 3 hour show tonight, that I'm writing this, having had to give my own fairwell speeches at the end of a job I really didn't want to stop doing, but it totally had me welling up.

These guys have been entertainment for me for a significant amount of time when I'd otherwise be quite bored and lonely and I'm really sad to see them have to go their seperate ways, even though I'm painfully aware of how necessary it sometimes is to break up a gang.

Anyway, I wish them both luck on their next endevours, and I'm hoping that the next 1up podcast, in whatever form it takes, lives up to the 'Listen Up' legacy. This isn't the last we've heard from Mr. Lee though I'm sure...

You can find the Joystiq and (archived) Listen Up show at an iTunes store near you...

phill and phil, any comedy from Radio 2 or Radio 4, TRS, Diggnation, Co-Op, Film Riot et al from revision3.com

Do have a fairly well-established timetable for all of the above, and have had for a while. Loving the wireless via the internet lol ;)

GamersWithJobs was another source of quality podcastery last time I looked.

Loads out there.

Spat KFC out of my mouth laughing at "we speak on Xbox Live/Twitter now" - you are such a name-dropping whore, sir :)

But empathise with stuff finishing - would be a bit scuppered for filling time if any of the shows above finished.
