Red Faction - Guerilla Profile for: BobiRoka Added by BobiRoka, 21-06-2009
Played this for about 3 hours today so here are my first impressions...

I seem to recollect I was very enthusiastic about the first game in the franchise, which seems like a disturbingly long time ago now. It promised revolutionary terrain deformation technology within a genre fashionable at the time.

This latest installment of the franchise is going for the same thing, but time has moved on and nowadays the third person sandbox genre is kinda where it's at.

And much like my level of excitement about the franchise this time around, it's turned the whole thing inside out, upside down and back to front.

Good job really, cos though this game seems to have come out of nowhere - it wasn't on my radar at all - it's very likely I'll stick around long enough to finish it.

It all starts when main protagonist (who bears more than a passing resemblance to Sam Worthington's character in the new Terminator flick) arrives on Mars to work as a miner alongside his brother. It seems things still aren't quite right on Mars, since the terran 'peacekeeping' forces brought in to fix the mess made my overthrowing of the evil 'Ultor Corporation' in the first game (or two? I can't be sure) have locked the whole place down in a similarly oppressive regime. So once again you find yourself underdog as a Red Faction initiate and have to go about liberating the martian colonies once more.

What this effectively boils down to is a sandbox adventure which takes place across six sprawling zones. The core dynamic being demolition. Pretty much everything can be blown up, from people to vehicles and most importantly - all structures, big and small, can be destroyed. This is defined pretty early on, with the first of your limited arsenal being a two handed hammer and some demolition charges.

Blowing things up yields salvage, and salvage is the main currency of the game. The more salvage you have, the better equipment you can buy, though you still have the tough choice of what you can equip into your 4 weapon slots. The other 'resource' in the game is morale, which you gain by completing missions, which range from rescue attempts, courier interception, base defense, sabotaging enemy supply lines and so on... The more morale you have, the more 'resistance' members will fight alongside you and also - quite importantly - the more salvage can be harvested from any structures or vehicles you blow up.

So far, so sandbox, but there's a good reason this kind of game structure is so popular. The desruction elements seem like they could give rise to some pretty cool tactical options later on and the firearms are satisfyingly meaty too. There's a reasonable choice of vehicles you can comandeer as well as some quite entertaining wheels-based missions - the last of which involved me having to smash into a series of comms masts in quick succession, whilst enemy vehicles attempted to send me veering off target by ramming me from all directions.

So sort of like Grand Theft Mars, I guess, but with the ability to blow lots of shit up. Not sure how well this will translate to PC - it is very much a console-centric game. But those with the time for games like GTA, InFamous and/or Prototype should find plenty to like here...

Just to clear things up, the original Red Faction was s**t. Downloading the XBL demo as I type, I hope things are better now. :)

I would consider InFamous on PS3 before you go anywhere near this mate...

Maybe if you stopped grinding achievement points in Fallout 3...?

Back to RF:G. Thought I'd have a quick gander at the MP. It's pretty good to be honest (or to put it another way, I'm not completely hopeless at it). Managed to not come bottom of the leaderboard.

There's quite a selection of weaponry to play with, oh and did I mention, you get to fly about with jetpacks?

There also seems to be some kind of CoD style ranking system...

All in all, this is turning into quite a substantial package...

It's been a while but I seem to remember the original red Faction being quite a good FPS; the scenery destruction in that was a bit of novalty item as you couldn't actually demolish buildings and concreate seemed to magically reappear if you turned your back. RF2 was a big bag of cack though...

The first game was quite enough for me, and my tolerance for straight FPS was quite large back then. RF:G is a completely different kind of game. It's not even First Person...

I noticed the new one is 3rd person but that doesn't bother me; Rogue Trooper was the same and I still fire that up now and again.

Was Rogue Trooper any cop? One of my fave 2000ad characters.

I tried out the Rogue Trooper game because it was always one of my favorite comic characters too. It's a very polished straightforward 3rd-person shooter that makes nice use of cover & sneaking around (rather than rushing in) and has variety of weapons + mobs. The developers have added lots of nice little touches to it without going overboard. Watching a Nords reaction after putting a bullet in his airtank is particually funny. The storyline is pretty solid too, very faithful to the original comics.

It's probably deserving of the high-70% / low 80% scores it generally got; I'd personally give it a mid-eighties score because the replay value I've got out of it.

It probably looks a bit gash by today's standards though doesn't it. C'mon. Admit it...

"gash"? really?

Oh, the shame.

Hmm, Deja Vu from a recent forum post. The graphics are still pretty good but admittidly may pale in comparison to recent releases.

Still, just because some of the older games aren't omg-uber-rendered-graphical-fests doesn't put them in the same bucket as Horace Goes Skiing or Manic Minor! ;)

I must admit - gaming visual seem to have peaked recently. I mean, Bioshock is now 2 years old and is still one of the most amazing looking games ever made.

It's cool that games are keeping their looks longer now...

Think I may have to get RT then. At some point.

*scribbles onto list...*

@Koorah (& anyone else who was thinking about buying RT): The Steam version of RT appears to be incompatible with Vista - when the game hits the 'Nam style helecopter levels the game slows down and becomes unplayable. This can be fixed by playing it in compatibility mode for Win XP/98 but Steam won't let you run in this mode. There's a load of original DVD versions on eBay for 3 quid (inc P&P) so I've ordered one of those.

Thanks for the heads up Radcheck. This will certainly be a rainy day game I think, as after last night I'm sorted until the end of the year - ArmA 2 with the Alfie Corps until September (assuming Alfie Corps want to do ArmA 2 that long, lol) then Champions Online.

If CO turns somehow turns out to be not the best MMO evah, then I reckon I'll give RT a shot.

Had an email from Amazon saying the release date for the PC version has been put back until September. Hopefully this means it's be tweaked for the PC in some way!

Err... I get to play the game now, as intended. On a machine that costs a fraction of what you're waiting to play the same game on. It's an absolute mugs game by far and I won't be part of it anymore - it's not like I even have to think about dependents either. Makes absolutely zero sense anymore...

If you ONLY play games on your PC I'd agree with you. If you want to have one machine to rule them all, I don't. Can you use your Xbox to watch High Def TV? I can. Can you use your XBox to run your business? I can. Can you use your xbox to create home videos, organise photos, keep in touch with ALL your friends, not just other x box users? I can.

Oh I can play nearly all the same games you can. Oh I need to wait a little while longer in some cases? Shrug. Oh my versions of the games can be expanded, added to, customised and I can play with my friends for free? Oh my machine can be upgraded to always get primo-eye candy (if I choose)?

I can see why its so inferior.

Been playing this over the weekend; it's fun but a bit too... arcade-ish? Shame really, if the realism factor had been upped a bit more I reckon this would've been in my top 10.

Also been playing over the weekend, and it's in my top 5.

Agree it is arcadey, but it also manages to push the story along nicely. My worry a few weeks back that I'd reached the final mission was wrong - some nice set-pieces.

And really, best soundtrack to a game for a long time. Very 70s sci-fi.

Just need to fix my sound-card drivers so I stop spodding whenever there's radio chatter. Sigh.

My Creative sound card was giving me trouble for ages; the ambiant sound on most games drowned out any speech. I ended up trying several different drivers without avail. Turns out my speakers were set to 7.1 in the 'Creative Audio Manager'. Switching the setting to match my crusty 2.1 speakers worked perfectly.

Meh, v dissapointed with RF:G. Got as far as liberating the first two areas but just can't be alfed with playing anymore (even playing in bits). It's a real one trick pony sprinkled with three of my pet hates for games (Get x of x without a feckin map, random mission generator, nevereneding enemies) Shame really because it had so much damn potential.

I get what you mean.

Thing with that game, is that the only real plot there is, is the whole 'liberation' thing you get started on at the beginning. And while it's cool to make the story out of the missions and the way you choose to approach the 'liberation' itself, the act of doing it doesn't have the intensity of human drama that I need with my day to day destruction...

Madness!

Liberated EOS last night - final mission underway.

Not going to defend it, each to their own :)
