Hmm, so... a number of Source mods were made available direct via Steam in the last couple of days (including Insurgency, which I really wanted to play today to alleviate Sunday afternoon tedium). Which started off badly, got annoying, and ended up being rather cool indeed.
Issue #1: Server version error if you have the previous downloaded version. Something to do with Steam. Googled - remove previous version, install direct from Steam. Voila, in-game.
Issue #2: Noobage. Really. Wow. I do appreciate that the difference between team uniforms is very difficult to distinguish at a distance, but TKing in the spawn while you try out the guns... No. You cock.
Fortunately, after sporadic venting at the teamkillers and some new folk who wanted to play but were a bit lost (but eager to learn - eg Toxic), all good and some fine teamwork was to be had.
Highlights for me:
- mad sprint for the first base on the annoying-but-can-be-brilliant Sinjar map. Smoke dumped in front of us as we get there, blocking the enemy view (and a rather smart over the building M204 from me... heh), and there's three of us lying nose-to-boot behind a very flimsy pick-up truck - capping the first base. Sure, we all died almost as soon as we had capped, but hot damn... what a rush.
- playing with a couple of people who like to er... how to put it... push forwards and not sit around waiting for people. This really floats my boat - to hear one guy saying "thats it thats it get A!" as we're already capping B ... priceless.
- crouching in the corner of the final cap point on Sinjar, me covering one exit, guy covering the other. Enemy runs in... I take him down... if timing had been off by even a fraction, would have TK'd the other guy capping. All good though. And he and I did it again the next round (but no pant-wetting almost-TK ;)).
As with CoD4 and the DVDF server, Insurgency has a few decent servers - given that it's been a minority mod (pretty obvious a lot of the new people there today had just discovered MP, and one of the guys mentioned that last night he had 159 kills, with the next highest at 19...), the quality of play has usually been very very high. Not a lot of fucking about, and the kind of comms you'd expect to hear on a Liveleak Iraq video. The OC server is my regular haunt, and if you can stick with the "realism" of the guns and the need to fire and move, or fire and hold, dependent on the immediate situation... it's a damn fine way to kill a few hours.
Cheers to everyone there for being consistent, being "professional" (? think that means "playing the game and not effing about" - the effing about had me leaving the CoD4 clan and eventually the DVDF server...), and most of all - enjoying the game. It really can be like the finest Alfie sessions.
Highly recommend.

Played Insurgency a few times and it does feel different to other FPS mods. The lack of any kind of cross hair other than iron sights has led to a wiped brows when I've stumbled on a bad guy. Theres a touch of the Unforgiven about it ;)
Agree on the comms, crystal quality assuming a half decent mike. Just wish more people had used them. Haven't dared show my face since a concentration lapse resulted in my tk-ing the same guy 3 or 4 times in a row. Not in the spawn I might add but even so, my shame was immense.

I did d/l this and have a bash, although I uninstalled it and HL2 due to hardrive space issues.
I need to play a bit more before I can form a proper opinion. Comms were used throughout, but some bloody fool had joined a French server. ;)
Only gripe I had in my brief game was the uniforms. The amount of times I didn`t kill the enemy because they looked like a team mate, only to get shot by them, but that will come with time. I didn`t TK though, I just didn`t K at all.
I`ll have to make some space on my drive and give it another shot.

The uniform stuff is an issue, but it adds to the game:
*spotting a figure moving around by a ladder*
"Anyone near the ladder next to the trains?"
"No" x 11
/me opens up with the SAW, confident it's a target by the ladder
There was screaming at the new guys last night: "if you're not sure who you are shooting at, don't shoot!". Difficult to get used to it - we're (Alfs) maybe used to knowing where all of us are, and to have to check before opening up can be a pain. Still, it's better than a -10 to your score :)

It was just a little annoying. I had the b****rs in my sights first everytime, then just ignored them. lol!
I`ll get use to it with time. I don`t mind checking before shooting. Its generally been my way.
My encounters were a bit faster though. Me and a bad guy meeting each other round a corner, for instance. I lower my readied rifle cause I think he`s friendly, then he shoots me. My choice of server didn`t help. lol!
I had the same trouble with US and Sahrani troops in the beginning, but can now ID them even with NVGs at 200 metres. I just need to invest some time with Insurgency and get use to it.

Will have to set a weekend for this, if ya up for it? I`ve made a quick start on freeing up space and will get it re-installed this weekend.
Yes, up for it :D
Had a fine session this evening, great teamwork, some cool sprinting to the next base that had people asking how the hell I'd got there (um, just running!), and 2 points away from my first 100.
And the noobage seems to be less bad, which is great.

Cool. I`ll get it installed tomorrow.
Oooook - Alfie Insurgency dedicated server is up, and running rather well with only me in it ;)
Filter by:
Europe; less than 100 ping;
www.deadalfs.co.uk | Insurgency Dedicated Server
:D
Let me know if you're about and just want to wander around - I'll turn alltalk on so we can use the in-game comms between teams :)
Otherwise, the server will be up all weekend. Will see what the bandwidth usage is etc and then decide if it stays, and to put ads in-game plugging this site and permanent custom decals... plugging this site ;)
Relatively easy to install and run, all things considered :)

Alrighty! Starting to re-install now. :)
Would of been sooner, but been a nice day, I popped into town to sort some bits.

I`ll be back after I`ve grabbed some food. Map change seems to hang, had to exit and rejoin each time.
yeah, cant sort out the map changing stuff... think because i installed and then removed an admin utility :S
going to close it down - will be on TS2 if ya wanna find a slightly more public one. server has to change maps ;)
Still, was cool to have rcon privileges and kick people for TKing :D

ah, k. I was wondering if something I forgot to turn off/allow might of been blocking it.
After last weekends rushed efforts with the INS server, will be trying again tonight/tomorrow.
Would be nice to have a dedicated Alfie L4D server up if and when it it's released :)

L4D Server? Yesum!
Indeed. Then we can lock it down to just us and have it available as and when we need it*, like the TS2 server :)
* except when it breaks ;)
Valve dedicated servers on Linux do have a sweet auto-restart thing though - if the game server crashes, it restarts automatically. Which is cool. Except when you can't figure out how to stop it restarting with a previous config and have to reboot the whole damn box to get it to stop.
Damn the over-efficiency of Valve!

OK, the alfie insurgency server is up and running: map changes are working, admin mod installed, custom decal added to the level (but havent found it yet lol).
Enjoy :D
Enjoy :D
