... where I am reminded that every population has it's percentage of alfeholes, even a digital population.
No, I don't mean the Alfie squad ;)
I've played LOTRO a few hours this week. Some on Monday, some tonight. Mainly because I've been busy, but I enjoy stepping away from it and heading back in.
But both times this week what can only be called the "chav hobbit" element have been in evidence.
First chavvit: enter a dungeon - lots of tightly grouped mobs, but with tactical stealthy pull-based attacking, you can kill the 12 flooblywotsits you need. As I enter, two guys are by the door, obviously about to do the same quest. They offer a group. I join. And the very vocal twunt who has appointed himself The Uber PlayerTM proceeds to run round every group of grouped mob so the 3 of us are facing 15 rather angry lizard things.
We die. Quickly.
At which point it becomes my fault for not knowing what he was going to do. When I question his "tactic", I get: "It's called "faster levelling", you noob".
Really.
Reeeeeeeeally.
Bear in mind we're both the same level.
Bear in mind I'm there quite happily on my own, not requiring anyone else to demonstrate my l33t hobbit skillz to.
And I'm the noob.
First /ignore of the game, then.
Tonight, toodling about in the very beautiful snowy wastes of Forochel. Kill three uber-flibbles, in an area populated with normal flibbles. Doing well. a few other people are doing the same quest, but we're all soloing and enjoying the peace of it all, TBH.
A max-level player strides past with a guild mate, obviously along to help out. Good stuff. A good reason for guildage, but I've managed 45/50 without a guild, and TBH play the game for the tranquility, not for the shite in /guildchat.
A guy just over there is battling a couple of flibbles - he's got one, but there's one to go, and his health is almost fucked.
I fire a stinging fire arrow of hobbitness at the flibble, and a smarting arrow of rahness, and he finishes it off.
I toodle off to continue the grind.
I get a /tell from the guy I've just "helped": I don't need your help, I am perfectly capable of doing it, so do not help
Er...
I reply: I was there, you were in trouble...
Him: You reduce my XP by helping me.
Er........ If you group, XP is shared. He copies and pastes (ooo, the twuntery of it all) the two XP counts he got.
Please keep in mind the flibbles are of varying levels, which will account for varying XP rewards.
And he finishes his strop with: "Learn how to play the game, noob"
Really?
Reeeeeeeeeally???
Second /ignore of the game, and the CBA kicks in.
So, that's twice I've popped in to my favourite peaceful game and been n00bz0red. Gobsmacked would be an understatement.
Even the perhaps l33t Insurgency servers have had more tolerance - even when people are being fucktards.
Time o the year, methinks. Still, I did manage to restrain from using the C word in any exchange, which was a great personal achievement.
Actually, not sure WTF either happened. Even in WoW, that stalwart of cliquery, you'd get a ty or a ta m8, and random groups would at least discuss tactics before "doing a Leroy" (except, of course... for Leroy).
Is it the subject matter? Are LOTR fans such anorak wearing hairy-footed anal-ists tht to upset the balance of the lore and HELP A RANDOM STRANGER is... to be punished? Maybe. I hope not. But I have noticed the social element isn't like WoW, which confuses me even more - it's a game full of real people, does typing "ty" or "I'll aggro them all and we'll get them done faster" really take so much time? Am I the only non-psychic playing the game?
Whatever, my boss feels the same about it - he groups with his missus and plays LOTRO, and won't group *at all* with anyone else (though he has with me when we've all been on at the same time - the server, not his missus) because he has even less patience than me.
Ah well.
Hurry up L4D and co-op play with the Alfs :D

No its not just LotR, WAR has a few of those. Had a similar situation the other night where I fired a couple of DoT's on some mobs a random guy was in trouble with and I got a shouted at.
Whatever. I proceded to watch him get nailed 5 minutes later when he pulled too many mobs. Made sure I was standing close enough so that he could see I could have helped, then finished off his leaving, har har.

And peaple throwing out L2P all the time, really p**ses me off.
Solution: play an utterly stonking offline RPG like Fallout 3.
The halfwits are everywhere unfortunately. I recently quit a WoW guild I had been in for a week, only to have to the the guy who ran it whisper me with "Traitor!!!" every time I logged on! Trying to reason with these numpties is just an exercise in futility. Just as annoying are 'l33t' numpties with their head up their alfe who question your class / gear / tactics, etc. Giving advice is fine but picking apart other players to stroke your own ego is just plain annoying.
I love the fact that despite each class in WAR having three career trees (similar to WoW) that can give diversity toi play style and tactics, many people still insist that if you're planning on taking your career uin a different way to them, you are just plain playing the class wrong.
Erm you know what? Its my f**king sub I'll play the class any damn way I want.
Erm you know what? Its my f**king sub I'll play the class any damn way I want.
That's an inherent problem with the way WoW works though. There really does seem to be a 'correct' way of playing it, though there are different builds for different activities I suppose.
That's one of the things I hated about it the most though - being told how to play...

FYI - Koorah is saying WAR is the same as WOW in that regard.
oh yeah. Oops. Not been playing enough lately.
Well yes exactly, there are different build for different activities, and thats the point. IF the class is only supposed to be played one way, why the f**k do have three different paths to specialise in, healing, buffs and debuffs? Hmmm HMMM??
I share your pain.
The great thing about Anarchy when it came out free was that there was a bunch of people who didn`t have a clue, me amongst them. We teamed up, pushed buttons to see what they done and laughed when it killed us all.
We never teamed with the leet for obvious reasons, but we had fun finding out about stuff.
The first Org.(Guild) I joined was full of Froobs (Free playing Noobs.) and was utterly fantastic. We all wanted to have fun, and the exploring of the world took precedence from levelling. We created trade circles and enthused about everything like the MMORPG children we were. Everything was new.
I miss those days. A mass recruitment in the Org. saw all the usual griefers and leets get in, and the fun died.
What I would like to see is something like Oblivion get the Co-oP treatment. a Mini mmorpg, as it were.
MMorpgs wound me up in the end....No, most the players did. I only tried a handful, but the mouthy twalfs got everywhere and I`ve never been able to find one that recreated the good old days of my first mmorpg experience.(ie. Lots of casual players.)
I`m not saying it was great because it was Anarchy online, but because I managed to team up with a huge bunch of casuals players, just like myself, who didn`t give a crap if we were playing right or wrong. We were having fun, and that to me is the point that a lot of the online wallies seem to totally miss.
I ended up going the way that Bobi suggested; SP RPGs`.

Completely understand this when it comes to MMORPG's. My Horde chars on WoW have been in the same guild for years; they're a great bunch of normal people who play for fun and to generally have a laugh. In comparison, my Alliance chars switch guilds every couple of weeks due to l33t raiders and annoying kids just being plain irritating. I'm hoping L4D is gonna be as cool as my old SWAT4 multiplayer sessions!
V True, although to be fair most players on WAR just want to team up and bash seven shades of s**t out of each other and its a lot of fun.
Its mainly the kids that are mouthy and if they ain't kids they bloody sound like them so its the same thing. I ignore them and play my game with the 95% of folks who want to do the same.

This is it though, I had my 95% and griefers f**ked it up. I was a General in that org and I bent over backwards to help people.(Thats why I was a General.) I was utterly furious and gutted.
Ignore only works so far, the barn door will be shut next time, as it were, for one of the horses anyway, but it doesn`t stop the reason your ignoring them from p**sing you off at the time.
Grrr!!! I hate griefers. I`d like to do a variant from Jay and Silent Bobs solution from there `Strikes back` movie. A long list of griefer addresses and a baseball bat. ;)

Amen to that.
"I'm hoping L4D is gonna be as cool as my old SWAT4 multiplayer sessions!"
How was SWAT4 MP? I only played the 3rd in MP(very cool) but not the 4th. Both stonkingly good games I thought.

The player vs. player on SWAT 4 was a bit hit and miss because usually tactics went out of the window and it turned into a dull every-man-for-himself-gung-ho-FPS session. However the Co-op (players vs PC AI) was fantastic, especially the German servers. They were as bossy as hell but it made for excellent teamplay!
Yeah zOm and I had a few co-op session on SWAT er...3 was it? Definitely had a different flavour to the Rogue Spear stuff we had been doing at the time and was an awful lot of fun.
Yeah, co-op`ed the 3rd. Very cool stuff. Although I often forgot we were trying to arrest them. lol!
hehe,
"PUT THE GUN DOWN! PUT THE GUN DOWN!....AH f**k IT! Ratatatatatatata"
"PUT THE GUN DOWN! PUT THE GUN DOWN!....AH f**k IT! Ratatatatatatata"
lol!
There were a few issues in in SWAT 4 (like weapons sinking into the floor) but the expansion cleaned most of them up. Hmmm, tempted to dust this off and see how it plays. Anyone else still got SWAT 4?
Aye, still have it. Don`t have the expansion though.
hmm. I`m out this evening, but will probably re-install SWAT4 when I get back, or tomorrow evening.
Miss the CQB stuff.
I didn`t get far in SWAT4. I had decided that I would only play the next level, if I was happy with how the previous level went. Think the disco shoot out never went how I wanted. lol!
I wanted to arrest everyone but they were stubborn b****rs. :)
Still remember having to knee cap someones Ma to help her decide to conform.

Cool, will have to sort out a co-op session Zom! lol @ the granny, completely forgot about that! I think I ended up tasering her 9 times out of ten. The disco level was great; the trick was to lockdown several of the doors at start from the upper levels iirc.
Ah, cunning. Will give that a go. Certainly up for a co-op session!
I`m out of practice grenading rooms, on the plus side, the stun effects are cool. lol!

Stumbled into an LOTRO instance tonight - wasnt intending to play for very long, but there was a shout going out as I passed by a quest that has been hanging about for a while.
Enjoyable stuff. The instance itself reminded me of the very best WoW ones, and apart from the final boss which totally pwned us 4 times, actually had a good time.
Does make me chuckle when we stand around discussing tactics 4 times in a row, then the last time, as we head in for what is obviously the last time before everyone bails... the most vocal tactician does a Leeeeeroy ("Ok, let's start!" (tank is still > 3 minutes away)) and we're all totally smited just as the tank arrives.
What madness.
Also did some PvP last night, as am at the level where I can be a goodling against the player-controlled evillings. The lag was quite astonishing, even on uber-low setting, but a brief foray today at a lower screen res and the frame rate was in double figures. It is pretty insane (was at least 40 of us against 40 of them at one point) and woe betide the poor lowly hobbit who rides through the enemy on the way back to the main group - not even a chance to click the "port away quickly" button before I'm standing back at the graveyard thinking about playing Insurgency ;)
Ah well. L4D demo this week before game proper next. Will ding 50 in LOTRO at the weekend, giving me a good while with L4D (beginning to get worried about how the game will handle retarded TKing) before the LOTRO expansion gets installed.
In related news I sat through the first LOTR movie and wasnt bored to tears with it. Never ceases to amaze me how things are more enjoyable without any hype.

But.. but... you don't 'get' PVP!
???
???
I do get it. I just don't get it in WAR. That's not fair on WAR (the "plot" behind the PvP is the same in both games).
But I did have 48 levels of backstory to assist in the "get away from our keep!!!" nonsense in LOTRO. And the PvP area (not instances) has firm groundings in the overall game plot and isn't simply a place to PvP at my level until I'm ready for the next one.
I'm not saying its fantastic in LOTRO, I'm only saying I did it. I won't be rushing back to it.
I've missed the point in WAR, I know. Not bothered :)

I joined a WAR guild last night. Am loving PVP me.
Sorry for my prolonged absence mate. I'm glad you're still enjoying it. What level are you now?
I'm probably gonna wind up getting GoW2 this weekend cos loads of people I promised I'd play it co-op with are getting it on Day 1 - so I really want to be there while everyone's hyped. Plus I have a ton of stuff I want to trade in and a load of loyalty points for GAME burning a hole in my pocket.
If L4D's out in a couple of weeks is it really worth me subbing to WAR right now? As great as it's been teaming up again, all I can think about doing with my spare time is burning the Fable 2/Fallout 3 candle at the mo...
I'm not done with WAR yet by any stretch, but there is just too much amazing stuff out there to commit to an MMO right now...

Well probably not mate don't worry. I'll be taking a break when L4D is released and probably will resub in the new year. Know how it is when there are too many games to play. WIth me its usually just two but the concept is the same.
Gaius is R17.5, RR14.

OK. Cool.
At the moment all I'm playing is Fable 2. Gears of War 2 will be for online fixes.
Then soon it'll be Fallout 3/L4D I guess...

Fallout 3 is my current SP gaming. It`ll ensure that I`ll only discover L4D in MP.
Enjoying it? I've yet to get properly stuck in, though am optimistic about finishing Fable 2 some time this weekend...
Yeah, enjoying it. Very dark and desolate. I`m quite the hero at the moment but the dark side in me is trying to get out. ;) Won`t go into to much details etc, as I know a few people are interested in playing.
Feels a little like Oblivion, reminds me of STALKER, but thats to be expected considering the setting.

Can't find SWAT 4 discs anywhere! :s Might get it on Steam if it's cheap...
