And a PC demo coming soon. I could scream like a girl right now.

Is it that bad then?
Meh.
Dunno if I'll bother with the demo TBH, it's just the clear sign that the game is so imminent that has me cackling with glee.
I've got plenty on until the end of this month (NWN2 is picking up speed plot-wise - Demons, Succubi, Gythyanki Sword-seekers? It always get's good around level 10, when the extra planar chaps appear :) ) so can probably hold out until the full game's release.
I don't need any more convincing...

I do, I'll download 2nite. :)
I don't need any more convincing...that the game's gonna suck.
Official Launch Trailer:
Have it.

I know this is shameless baiting cos it's just generic 'It's gonna suck' rubbish without a shred of actual argument about why. How can this game possibly suck? Maybe if you don't have eyes or ears then it could be flawed on a base interactive level. Otherwise it's just so obviously gonna s**t over everything else this year...
I took the bait then didn't I. Again...

May have to revise my plan not to play it. Dammit.
And it's supposedly a 40 hour biatch of a game as well :S
40 hours? Jings, that will take some dedication if I were to tackle it.
Doom 3 I reckon I'll complete this time as I seem to be over my 2 hour tolerance threshhold, but Bioshock will require more in the way of plot comprehension rather than breadcrumb following.

Interested to know what you make of the final encounter in D3...
I've heard (from you I think) that its a bit of an anticlimax. I know its the journey in many cases thats important, but you would hope the pay off was worth the slog. Far Cry was a prime example. Awesome game until it just....stopped.
I shall let you know none the less.
I shall let you know none the less.
How was the end of Doom 3 mate?
Oh er...never found out.
Cheers Bobi, that trailer made me laugh. It is 2007, and Comedy FPS Games (TM) have arrived.
Truly Missing The Point (TM) more like.
I find the whole 'big daddy' thing/creature/whatever rather lame, I hope there's better in the games bestiary.
But it's art nouveaux/ deco/ le ponce, Alf!!
The point is you invariably end up tangling with one, killing it, then feeling ashamed of yourself. Or something...
Anyway, downloading the demo. Couldn't resist. 33% and counting...

Just dl the demo, you doughnut! Seriously, I'm almost excited on your behalf!
LOL...great minds, or summit, you editing git.... :)

Errm, from the videos you encounter loads of them. Great.
Errm, from the videos you encounter loads of them. Great.
From the review I read they are as big a part of the game as you make them. They can almost be ignored completely and aren't your main foes in the game at all.
Which I thought was quite apparent in the videos.
78%...

Review score already?
Lol!
Right. Played and finished the demo in about 30 mins. It's a sweet little taster of whats to come I reckon...
Got to play around with the Fire and Electricity plasmids a bit, hack a security turret and kill some of the most wonderfully disturbing enemies I've ever experienced in a videogame. Horribly.
Honestly, there is more imagination and production value in this game than many films I've seen recently. The little vocal blurbs spouted out by the enemies are truly inspired. "I must control myself"... etc.
And the water effects are the best you've ever seen....
Um... what else, without spoiling it...
I dunno. It's a lot more 'gung ho' than I was expecting, but the period setting is truly disorientating in a kinda psychadelic-cthuluesque way. And there's a real reliance on grabbing whatever you can find and using it to your best advantage.
And headshots count for instant kills, so DNM should be happy.
Oh and cigarettes increase your magic, whilst lowering your health, while Alcohol has the reverse effect. Go figure
... :)
It all looks amazing on 360, but am looking forward to higher rez and mouse/keys on PC.
A 15 day stint at work (which includes 2 festivals) should make the August 24th come around fairly quickly, which is just as well, cos I am GAGGING to play this now!

Why? I thought my newly sworn re-allegiance to my all powerful uber PC was old news by now surely?
It's just your ridiculous double standards mate, waiting for your complete mirth towards the PC gaming scene again with unbridled anticipation.
It's quite basic mate. I couldn't afford a gaming PC for ages and now I have one. It's transported me over to the other side of the fence in some respects.
The 360 will still have it's uses though. I won't be waiting for the PC version of Mass Effect to come out etc...

Incidentally I got to 93% downloaded and couldn't be alfed to wait any longer and went to bed. Will check out the demo tonight and let you all know the proper verdict. :)
I didn't think Eurogamer's review was out until Friday?
LOL, other than Tom's writing I don't read any other reviewers there, as it's generally a load of ballhang. Best review score is and always will be provided by gamerankings, tends to weed out the 'oooh we got given review code so we must give it a good rating' crowd.
Yeah, their Gothic 3 score was especially accurate ;)

That's crap tho mate and you know it, the PC was 'a dead platform', don't make me find your own very words. It's nothing to do with affording anything, it's to do with wearing your usual blinkers for the 'best thing at the time evah'. Be a man and admit you were wrong.

But I'll still stand by the fact that the outlook was really grim for a very long time. For me, all there was to play was a bunch of MMOs (none of which could touch WoW - and I'd already played that to death*) and Battlefield Duty 1948, which bores the tits out of me.
I was playing the PC games I wanted to play on a machine that cost me a qtr of the price. From my perch, buying a PC just for games seemed like a mugs, erm, game.
And then, at the start of this year, it was made quite abundently clear to me (both by you lot, edge and numerous online publications) that the PC was BACK, BACK, BACK. Which is why I've stretched my purse to get a decent rig. Had things still been as they were in 2005/6, I really wouldn't have bothered.
You can't deny it. There's an avalanche coming, and I've always said I'll be whereever the games are: Hellgate: London, Tabula Rasa, NWN2, Half Life: Orange Box, Bioshock, The WITCHER! DRAGON AGE!!!
Double Standards? I blame the insane dev cycles these games have nowadays that seem to have the power of redefining the gaming landscape in the space of a few months. Speaking of which, I was thinking of getting a DS since the PSP lineup is such a pile of dogs**t...
*for my attention span anyroad.

Scored 96% in the recent PC Zone and they're generally spot on with their ratings, IMHO.
Just noticed this is out on the Bank Holiday weekend - has anyone ordered this via the 'net and expecting to get it for the Friday?

Gonna play the demo tonight to decide upon whether I am keeping my pre-order or not.
Lets face it DNM, even if you loved the game you'd never admit it cos then you'd have to agree with Bobi...
;)
;)
But, but, but....PC Zone gave Half Life 2 a high score...
What's that all about then?
:(
What's that all about then?
:(
The only backlash I'm aware of involving Half Life 2 was here.
On Gamerankings it still manages to tally up a score of 96% based on 95 Media Outlets. Either Valve have a enormously networking payroll, or you naysaying chumps are wrong!*
*I'll go with the latter.

Everyone makes mistakes.
Agrred, HL2 deserved a 90%+ score... *sigh*
/sets Gravity Gun to 'Lob Naysaying Chumps' :)

We need a new thread I reckon :)
In other news, Doom 3 is so much easier when you aren'tstoned off your tits. I scream less too.
Just had a brief play of the demo... The intro is just like something out of Myst 4 or 5 in the lighthouse (seriously, it is just like it!), but there the similarities definitely end, you'll be happy to hear. Beautiful to look at sure, inspired enemies I'm not so sure, it steals a whole lot of ideas from others sources in particular Alice, but plagorising is accepted in this day of unoriginality. Am liking the atmosphere, and a couple of bits have genuinely had me spooked, but never before in a game has so many doors been closed behind me, not even in Doom 3 FFS! All amounts to making it seem very on-rails, but I feel fairly sure (I f**king hope so anyway) that this is just because it's the intro to the game proper. If it's all like this, it will be a very dull game indeed.
The water is acceptable, not the best I've seen. :) Pre-order won't be cancelled, have seen enough and cacked myself enough for the curiosity candle to still burn.

The game has you tooing and frowing between areas a fair bit so I understand. A bit like System Shock 2 really. So 'on-rails' worries should be laid to rest now.
I got the Alice thing too, though I think that's a purely co-incidental similarity.

So not true, 'Gears of War' is one particular thumbs up at Bobi's taste. :)

If it continues to follow the really quite OTT linear nature in the game proper, it will be ebayed. :)
It won't. So don't even let those kind of dirty thoughts infect your mind.
Headshots work too, so you should be in heaven!
(Just played the demo again :) )

Will this game run on a 9800 pro p4 3 gigger?
If so I'll prorder it, but cancel it before the day of release.

Cool trailer for MOH:Airborne on page 2 ;)
Apparently system requirements aren't unreasonably high.
Though it will significantly less lush without a DX10 card.

"It takes the tired, worn-out FPS genre by the scruff of the neck, reinvents and bend it out of shape in such a breathtaking fashion that it's going to take something very special to top this in the months and years ahead."
FPS is tired and worn out? Or the plank reviewing the game is bored of FPS?
Reviews do make me laugh =))
The mention of linearity should not be glossed over in the stampede to clamber onto the BGE wagon, either.
I'd get it to see what the Unreal 3 engine can do.
£24.99 pre-order at Game...

Jeez Ebow, I admire your journalistic skills in hunting down the one tiny sniff of possible negativity in that review, and referring to it utterly out of context to make a point.
You sir are a true Alfie. ;0)

Sorry mate.
I just thought it was worthwhile pointing out behind the eye-candy it may just be as linear as many other games.
My bad. Ooo, cool water!
;)

As linear as a game that lets you clothsline enemies with booby traps that you use telekinesis to place whereever you like, that lets you navigate around the gameworld as you see fit uncovering subplots and secrets, that lets you manipulate the AI to your advantage setting up temporary allegiences and using the environment to your own advantage.
So not very linear at all then really.
Oh, linear in that there's an end to the game? Linearity is such an evil thing...

And the second from last paragraph, re multiplayer, contains some of the most deluded, ill-informed and self-justifying piffle I've read for a long time.

What the hell are you talking about mate?
Fact 1: There is little worth in tacked on multiplayer extras. When was the last time you played Wolfenstein MP? or Prey? or any other single player focussed shooters MP extras? This is a TIGHTLY FOCUSSED SINGLE PLAYER EXPERIENCE. MP is irrelevent.
Fact 2: The FPS genre is so very very tired. That is so a fact.

Um, actually, that's only a fact on Planet Bobi.
In the real world, millions of people enjoy FPS on a daily basis, in FPS that are many many years old in some cases.
As always, just because you don't do it, does not mean it doesn't exist.

Um, ok.
But I'm not bleating that SP games are so very very tired, am I?

And there you have it. The most polarising quote I could have read. This is the difference why I'll still be saying it's the BGE while you've quit playing it halfway thru to shoot nazis.

Actually I think he makes a very good point. There a re shed loads of FPS and other games that have mediocre MP and bring nothing new to the table. Some games excel at FPS MP (CoD, BF, Quake etc). Whats wrong with having a game devoted to the single player experience?
Ditto.
There's nothing wrong with it.
My objection is the twalf reviewer dismissing MP because he's still sucking the man-sauce out of the SP game.
Good multiplayer on a great single player game is an excellent way to keep the game in the publics eye after they've slogged thru the SP, called it the BGE, then bought something new.
Wolfenstein MP, Prey MP - sucked. Bolt-ons that should have been patches/expansions. The standalone Wolfie MP that was released some time later - rocked.
I'm cynical with the reviewers comments, and about this kind of game for this kind of audience - it's a one shot deal. You pay your money. You get 40 hours of game time. They may be the most amazing forty hours of game time you've ever had.
But after those forty hours, you need to go and buy something else that's being hyped as the BGE.
So.. 40£ every month, maybe? £480 a year? Fair enough, I guess. But that's a *lot* of hoo.. er... other stuff you could be spending that money on.
Lack of decent MP devalues the game, which is why Prey is 4.99 at Game lol.
In a year's time, we'll all be saying "what was that game with the cool water effects and the scary little girls?".
It's a waste. It's short-sighted of Irrational. It's a sign of the times, and of console/PC cross-overs, it seems.
IMHO.

Not at all. If your 'competely wrong' viewpoint generates discussion and helps contribute to making this the most lengthy and unnavigable thread on the site then I'm all for it. It says Bioshock at the top after all :)
So what you're saying is, making the best SP FPS game ever is all well and good, but it's completely irrelevant unless there's a s**t MP mode attached to it.
Says the man that gave Prey 99% BUT NEVER PLAYS THE MP!!! and has an aversion to paying £40 for a 40 hour game but no problem spending 3 times as much on ahem... something that lasts about 0.0001 the time. I know... I must be gay.
Why was the Prey MP s**t? Because it was first and foremost a SP game. With ambitions that high that's all it was ever gonna be. No one wants to deal with that portal/upside-down s**t
