Also on Joystiq, this poll here: http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/10/poll-for-which-platform-are-you-buying-grand-theft-auto-iv/ shows that 58% of people will be buying the game on 360, as opposed to PS3.

Chav console of choice confirmed.
Chavs = Lots of people (Playstation Fanboys)
Lots of people = Massive Sales (PS2)
Massive Sales = Lots of money available for niche game development (God of War, Shadow of the Colussus etc)

More gushing praise no doubt at Eurogamer.

If only I could use the tumbleweed emote here...
Anyone else notice how the comments on the article degenerated into sniping over the way games are scored.
Lol old times.

Shan't be buying this.

So, GTA4 will only sell 40,000 copies, 3/5ths of them on 360?
Wow, Sony must be quaking in their booties after shifting nearly 2,000,0000 copies of Monster Hunter Freedom 2 G on PSP in a few short weeks. Helps to have more than one console out at a time....all of which don't break every five minutes. RROD FTL

Wow. Just read Eurogamer's impressions and am skipping over daisies right now
GTA IV is projected to do 6 million in the first week.

Hype addict.
Tempted to write a blog just praising GTA 4 (or slating it lol) just so it gets picked up by Google and we get some traffic.
Oh... but then we'd have more hype-monkeys...
Ok, scratch that.

I've cancelled my pre-order.

Why?
I haven't really.

me too.
I've cancelled mine more times than you!
I've bought all your pre-orders and chucked them away...twice.
Point made methinks
GTA is boring.... buy it play it for a couple of days and then realise its a shiny new gta 1...
But it's hardly as if they're polishing a plopplop here is it? Free-roaming, cops vs robbers? From a game design point of view it's the absolute pinnacle. It's a fusion of story driven action gaming and absolute freedom to do whatever you like within a broad set of parameters in a game world that feels more alive than even the most popular MMOG. It's cause and effect, reward and consequence. And it's all delivered in the most unpatronising and mature way. Sam Jackson in San Andreas... Ray Liotta in Vice City. That's the level Rockstar are operating on. It's a true cultural phenomenon. GTA has transended videogame status and I AM ABSOLUTELY GAGGING FOR IT!!!
Ohh err.
And I just read in Shortlist magazine that Ricky Gervais is in the game. Doing a stand up show no less... and more (which they won't reveal)...
Well, after the second series of Extras, he needs to find a new fanbase, so... desperate times etc...
Do whatever you like in GTA4? You mean wreak chavvy mayhem with no let up?
Delivered in a mature way? What constant opportunities for committing ultimate naughtiness presented to the tittering player? How peurile.
Basically Oblivion with hoodies, and a few swear words.

The more I play LOTRO, the more I'm reminded of Oblivion. It may not have the correct day/night cycle (people don't go inside at night in LOTRO), but it just... feels like it's related to Oblivion.
Still, I can't beat up hos and mug old ladies in LOTRO, so it'll never catch on.
Is this released on the 24th? Ok then - I'll give it until May 1st before the next BEST GAME EVER is identified and the hype-boulder starts rolling again

It's the 29th - damn those pesky 5 days.
Starts rolling? Haven't you not noticed my behaviour lately?
How peurile?
It f**king annoys me how much innocuous aspect of the game seems to shadow the entire game in an infantile light for you guys. GTA is light f**king years ahead of anything out there. When I play the game, I only tend to get involved in the sandbox mayhem after an especially bad way. Believe it or not, it's quite a satisfying way of blowing of steam.
The rest of the time, I'm quite caught up in the stories - hence the titles of the handheld iterations.
I appreciate each to their own and all that, and GTA is guilty in some way of the accusations made, but seriously - this is going to be the biggest videogame ever. Ahead of Mario, Tomb Raider, Halo... and for damn good reason too.
After all, how did it get so much ddaily mail attention in the first place? Certainly not for being s**te...

Light years ahead of what exactly, and how? Any game can do what GTA4 does, if it effectively loses the plot, extolls the virtues of crime, and lets you run around a vaguely realsitic world doing dumb tasks until you're sick of the sight of your console.
Yawn. How about being a good game and with a little thought/ focus? Nope, GTA4 need not apply.

Philistine.
Online the PS3 version has the most (pre)orders...

Looks like Msoft spunked rather alot on getting all that extra content. I guess they've gone for the best retail version (PS3) and ignored future what-ifs.

Null and void.
First up, the 360 version is top on that first link you sent me.
And secondly, of course there's a surge for the special edition NOW. Didn't you get the memo? Game have stopped taking pre-orders for the standard version cos they've sold out. They're telling people if they want it on Day 1 to get the special edition, cos they haven't sold that many.
This is of course absolute b******s and merely a marketing ploy to shift the more expensive SKU.

More expensive, more reliable, better specced, better equipped. You pay cheap u get cheap...as you've already discovered...LOL.
By SKU I was referring to the Special Edition of GTAIV. Perhaps I'm getting my terminology muddled...:S
Sorry, but I didn't think you could be referring to the game. After all, if pre-orders have stopped for the standard, then it's hardly a 'ploy' to be selling the remaining...SKU. It's kind of the only thing they can do.
My main point is however, that the reason the PS3 special edition is high on the pre-order chart THIS WEEK is cos that's all that's available to pre-order.
The standard PS3 edition having sold out...ah yes, it makes sense...
Just weird that the special edition Xbox 360 version has sold out too.
As in 'highly unlikely'.

And its special edition many places above the 360 equivalent. Lots of people wasting lots of money :(
All I know is that I know 1 person who owns a PS3 and loads of people who own an Xbox 360. And that 1 person doesn't seem to like any of the games that I like. By buying a 360 you're entering into a community of gamers. By buying a PS3 you get to watch nice HD movies and the occasional amazing game that lasts for about 5-10 hours.
That is such utter elitist ignorant s**te.
So anything you're not fanboi-ing about isn't a community?
Absolutely gobsmacking.
It *is* a community, just not one that you belong to.
In-fracking-sane.
If you want to enter into a community of gamers, download the Trackmania z0m posted in the forums last week. Servers are 70+ players, unique skins for the cars etc etc etc.
That's free.
That will last more than a week (for those interested in it).
And I will bet my nads people in *that* community aren't so effing precious about it.
Even had to drag myself away from LOTRO to re-read your comment, such was my incredulity at your blinkered-ness.
Wow.

No, come on...GTA4 and Oblivion both last longer than that, right? Though not as long as Gears of War, obviously.
Not that I'd call any of those even slightly amazing.
Btw, numbers are fun...The two people I know who own Xbox 360s have both had the RROD. 100% failure rate. Inspiring....not.
The hundreds of people I have easily found to play online in Warhawk/ Resistance have all utterly whupped me. Infuriating more than inspiring, but still more fun than packing my knackered console off to the menders again and again.

Dear Customer
Grand Theft Auto IV is nearly here!
Thank you for your order {********} for Grand Theft Auto IV. The highly anticipated GTA IV is due to be with you on Tuesday 29th April. To make sure that we get this title to everyone who ordered it for release day we have had to start our picking and packing process earlier than we would for our normal pre-orders. As a result, we may look to authorise your credit/debit card from tomorrow.
Kind regards

Dear Site User,
Would you like me to remove your customer order so nobody calls up and tries to get it delivered to a different address?
As utterly hilarious as that would be, I'll cover yo ass anyway - order number asterisked.

I logged on from America for this? Last you'll see of me for another week. About long enough for the next mind-blowing bag of hype sh-ite to breeze through I guess.
Sorry was p**sed. What we talking about?
You logged in stateside just to bait me?
Anyone that doesn't buy this game is going to miss out BIG time.
Anyone that doesn't buy this game is going to miss out BIG time.
Which game are you blethering about this week?
I did just fine missing out on GTA 1, 2 and 3 on PS2...this is no different.
Well, I got the missus to cancel the pre-order through HMV even despite the 1200 MS points you get with it. Can't justify such expenditure at the moment, when I have a fair few games sitting unfinished already. The more I read about GTA4 the less it's interesting me.
Mentalist.
Have another go at RE4 Wii m8, you'll love it!
Yes indeed, must find me some time for that one.

I'm on chapter 4...shrieking chainsaw bitches aplenty. Terrifying

Hey. IGN gave it a perfect 10 too....
And said the PS3 version looks...BETTER
"For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster. Don't worry Xbox owners, the load times are rarely more than 30 seconds and don't occur very often. The slight visual edge goes to PS3, but the 360 is no slouch. Either version will do you proud."
Excellent

Bothered. I've got both machines now.
So the PS3 version has the visual edge... I still don't regret buying it for Xbox 360. Everyone I know is getting it for 360 and I'm looking forward to seeing my friends list full of people playing GTA IV online.
There's also the fairly significant issue of two weighty 360 exclusive add-on packs.
Has anyone seen the video review? It looks utterly stunning. Reviewer bloke said he'd pay £300 for the multiplayer alone, although the single player is an epic 35-40 hours long.
And especially for Koorah (quote from the review):
"The series cheered (and criticized) for glorifying violence has taken an unexpected turn: it's gone legit. Oh sure, you'll still blow up cop cars, run down innocent civilians, bang hookers, assist drug dealers and lowlifes and do many, many other bad deeds, but at a cost to main character Niko Bellic's very soul.".
Whole thing + video review here: http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/869/869381p1.html

Cool. Xbox 360 obsolescence only a matter of time then, dude
Btw, there will be LOADS of people playing it online on PS3 too...like with Resistance, Singstar, Warhawk, GT5 Prologue...etc etc.
As for those add on packs? Meh...when Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, et al hit in autumn 2008 who's really going to be playing GTA4 still? Seriously dude, it's such a non-event in the console war. Msoft have wasted megabux with this bogus hope.

From the review itself:
"If you're wondering which version to buy, the best suggestion is to consider what your friends will purchase. That's because online multiplayer has made its way into GTA IV and it is awesome. And, like all great things, it's best played when drunk and with as many friends as possible."
I think people will be playing GTA IV for a long while to come. It's such a tremdously bigger deal than any other game, let alone the one's you mention above. A MASSIVE single player game and successfully executed multiplayer. What more could you possibly want?

"What more could you possibly want?"
What 99.9% of people who are gamers with disposable income want every few months or so...a new game to play.
"And there really aren't that many PS3 exclusive games that interest me right now."
All I can say is...you've finally got a PS3 and still no Uncharted: Drakes Fortune?
You total nutter, m8....total nutter.
I've no doubt you'll say even the creme de la creme of PS3 games are rubbish, after you've borrowed your m8's copies and played them for 5 minutes

Drake's would be too hard for Bobi, he needs the hand-guided simplicities of games such as Halo or GTA4, for the lame gamer generation.
I played a little of the Uncharted Demo over the weekend and quite enjoyed it. To be honest, if it had been a different time of the month and I didn't already have a fat pre-order on it's way I would probably get it. If was going to buy 1 game for the PS3 then that would be it, without a doubt.
Wanting GTAIV has nothing to do with difficulty (or lack thereof). I want to experience the most technically advanced game ever made, with the assurance that I'll like the game, having enjoyed every installment to date.
I only have so much time (not to mention money at the moment) - getting the PS3 was an unexpected bonus - all my gaming time is reserved for GTA IV for the next month or so...

Oh yeah - DB - what's your gamertag (or whatever it's called in Sony world)?
Oh this is classic. Just popped over to http://www.gamerankings.com/ GTAIV is clocking up an insane 99% reviews average right now. It just has to clock up 20 reviews to go straight into the gamerankings.com all time leaderboard at no.1.

No, cancelled it, too many other gaming fish to fry and also skint as a skint thing.
Ah ha... Glad I got the 360 version then... http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=187902
It looks like it's happening on 360s too though, but more people are buying it for PS3, hence the higher reports.
God, the game sounds like a buggy piece of sheet all round...awful software, simply awful.
God, the game sounds like a buggy piece of sheet all round...awful software, simply awful.
You'll both have to do better than that...
Official: DNM really has lost it.
More important things to do with my money at the mo mate, I'll get it when it comes down in price, or borrow it off someone. I never finished any of the other GTAs they always impressed massively then got really tedious real quick, can't see GTA4 being any different.
Hmmm.... this is the best one yet though. And with a campaign that's massively more engrossing than any of the others. Apparently. I'm very much hoping my copy shows up today.
And erm... you realise you just let slip that you have failed to complete more than one game you started?
Amended - Official: DNM lost it ages ago and has been getting a rise out of me for some time.

I don't have any shame in that, the GTA games are massive, and unfortunately not varied enough to hold interest. Lost Odyssey for example, however, did and I'm still playing through to find secret achievements long after completing it.
Ebow - Can we have a paged comments system please, so that long threads take less middle scroll button bashing?
You think Lost Odyssey has more variety than GTA? Hmm... I was about harshly disagree then, but I suppose it's not without a range of strategies within it's turn-based/random battles/exploration style. GTA is more freeform though. I suppose if you don't like shooting stuff and/or driving cars then that's fair enough, but you f**kING WELL DO DNM.
I accept you may have 'better things' to do with your time and money, but to try and consider GTAIV as something you don't want to play is absurd. You're just trying to talk yourself out of it.
Also, while these games might be HUGE, the regular story arc of Vice City, San Andreas and the PSP games have all only really lasted me between 30-40 hours. And that's well below what LO took (for me anyway).
I'm quite sure you'll throw endless derision at GTAIV until you finally get it. And by then it will be old news to everyone...
I noticed the respawned lot are going mad for it... and on Xbox almost exclusively too...

I'm basing this on the last 3 GTAs which I've enjoyed for sure, but ultimately never could be alfed to finish them because they ended up boring the pants off me. I don't see GTA4 being any different, because, it ISN'T different, just the same sandbox game with next-gen lick of paint. I'm sure it's marvellous, but I've got better things to waste my dosh on at the mo, and I'll catch it later when everyone else has got bored of it.
I'm not throwing derision of GTA4, far from it, I'm a fan of the series you numpty, just not in a rush for this one that's all when I have so many other games to play. My next game will probably be Lego Indy tbh, or possibly Pro Evo on the Wii which looks total r0x0rn3ss.

I've put in 60 hours there or thereabouts, although could've completed it at around 38 hours, but I chose to beef my team up to make the 4x Arthersaurus bit easier.
Glad I did, there's some neat side s**t going on.

They'll be bored of it soon enough, besides Age of Conan is on the way, everyone will probably stop playing anything for that. Almost, me included, but I'm not sure I'll ever be a PC gamer again.

"Also, while these games might be HUGE, the regular story arc of Vice City, San Andreas and the PSP games have all only really lasted me between 30-40 hours. And that's well below what LO took (for me anyway)."
I've put in 60 hours there or thereabouts, although could've completed it at around 38 hours, but I chose to beef my team up to make the 4x Arthersaurus bit easier.

Lego Indy, rather than GTAIV.

DNM - we can, though I'm not sure why anybody would want to scroll really, when the discussion quickly becomes:
Alfie A: "it's the best game ever!"
Alfie B: "I disagree"
Alfie A: "You are wrong, and stupid"
Alfie B: "?"

In fact, it is *so* completely like that these days, we'd have less teenage-opinion-forcing on a movie site.
"What's your favourtie film?"
"Dude, Wheres my car?"
"Really, I like St Trinian's"
"You are stupid"
"No, you are stupid"
"No, you are stupideresterest"
etc etc
I miss the days when it was all being discussed, rather than "if you disagree YOU ARE WRONG".
I'll be over there, watching the tumbleweed.

Well I do try to rationalise my reasons for not doing X, but it falls on Bobi ears.
If you scroll up, you will notice moments of restraint from my corner.
You are all f**king wrong and stupid though.
PLUS - If I could post more than one news story about a certain title before ZE GERMANS consider it 'editorialised baiting' (or whatever) then this comments thread would be a fraction of the size it is now. Oh and if my pre-order had turned up yesterday... :P

And according to my HTML validator this page has 720 errors on it.

And that, my friend, is why the blog banner is not on my important list.
Get off your lazy alfe and code some stuff if you want it.
Alternatively, eff off to Eurolamer and speak with like-minded fanboys.
Hope that's unambiguous enough.

Since those last 3 posts it's gone up to 800. I could help fix it I guess, or I could play GTA IV. It's much more fun I reckon. I shall explain exactly why at lunchtime. I'm sure you're all eager to know

If you are *not* going to help (because you'd rather be doing other stuff), shutting the f**k up would be the suggested course of action. Grrr.
Your HTML validator must have the same brain as you then.
Quite young and eager to annoy, you mean?
Phil saw me in Game today...initially he thought I was loitering with intent to purchase GTA4...but I was reading the back of the Ninja Gaiden 2 box, honest

Even Edge gave it 10. It's a 100% belter and no mistake

Edge are reknowned for their misguided and generally s**t reviews tho.
Hmmm, seem to recall them giving HL2 a 10.
ROFL
ROFL
Like everyone else.
And we all know how good that game turned out to be....
I think it's these 'perfect' unquestioning 10s being dished out indiscriminately that gamers have to be a bit suspicious of.
It seems that these kind of reviews are written when the reviewer side of the individual has the day off, and the fan boy steps right in to take their place. It's easy, I know, to be rabidly excited about a sequel for one's fave game evah. I was one of those who was insanely excited for HL2. I bought a bleeding Alienware for it, ffs. Oh, but then...Then the disappointment.
No, it's not always the case that the more I anticipate the less I'll actually end up liking. It wasn't the case for Onimusha 3, Monster Hunter PSP 1 and 2, or DOOM 3. These were games whose earlier episodes had 100% primed me for the sequels...but I loved the sequels when they arrived. No, that's not my problem at all.
Now, to say that just because everyone is tripping over themselves to wax lyrical to the tune of 10/10 or 100%, that the game must be that good...? Nonsense I'm afraid.
My theory is that once the reviewer gives way to their fanboy alter ego, then the review is written in a misty haze. And yes, they may well list the game's faults, but then (unlike their usual selves) write some tedious ball hang about the game's ultimate brilliance obviating these faults. Previously these faults would have been noted and taken account of in the final score...hence the amount of nines/ 90% games out there...you know, when the reviewer hasn't been jettisoning his juices willy nilly simply because it's a sequel to his favourite game.
When a reviewer gives a perfect 10, and absolutely refuses to allow many openly acknowledged flaws to deviate from the final score-line, and when that game is as big a hype-magnet as HL2/ Halo 3 and GTA4? Well, listen to those alarm bells ringing, folks, because the Emperor has turned up again, and he's stark bleeding naked.

Or it is really, and quite genuinely is the best game some people have ever played:

From the article...
"OK then. Criticism voiced, wage justified, I can now carry on wetting my pants over this game"
You seem to have validated DM's opinion. Well played mate

Um. Err... I didn't have time to read ALL of that. Regardless, my point was that people are genuinely loving it so much they'll happily blog the hell out of it - outside of review scores etc.
Me neither. Got that far saw the next paragraph was fanboy gush so decided to cut my losses.
I take your point though. Nobody at all blogged their gaming experences before GTA4, I mean, there just weren't any games worth talking about before then were there?

Well, you need that $5 more than that bitch, eh?
Well, you need that $5 more than that bitch, eh?
If you will carry on... GTA IV really isn't like that at all. IMHO, such juvenile behaviour completely contradicts the grown-up story the game is trying to tell. Yes. You can do this, but so far I've only been compelled to go on a murder spree in MP, which - let's face it - is what it's all about.
Once again... the game allows you to murder pedestrians, it doesn't make you. Ever. So far I've only been killing people in self defence, or if the mission requires it...

So you say.
Favourite moment of the game so far involved walking into a Launderette to hassle some guy for protection money. He promptly pegs out the back door and jumps in a car and takes off. I kick the window out of a nearby sedan and make pursuit. I've nearly caught up with him by the time we reach an intersection and the sun is shining off the cars in a quite spectacularly realistic way.
I decide he's reasonably within the range of my pistol, so I smash out the window and start firing, sparks spraying out behind my quarry as I shoot his tyres out. He loses control and stacks it into a parked car

I'm sure his wife and 6 kids would be impressed with your lack of criminal activity. He was running away from a mobster after all, he deserved it.
Would rather play through my old PS2 games than this graphically jazzed up old school crime-athon aka GTA4.
Still, plums are smart, and MGS4 is looking tempting.

Never been a fan of MGS, even the latest one makes me tut.

MGS4 looks alright. I'd rather play Splinter Cell though TBH.
Really?

Nope. 360...pee-owned.
And if you're going to flog a dead horse by doing 4 games in a row...do it right:

Btw, tried this yet?

Not bad, in a pretty, floaty, just-another-fps kinda way.

Groan Groan Groan Groan Groan... I won't be touching Doom 4 with a bargepole, although of course you can expect the world's first pre-NDA review here
I wasn't referring to the console battle here specifically, rather, the larger sales figures for GTAIV on 360. You cannot persuade me any other way. I definitely made the right choice getting on 360. I wouldn't be able to hook up with any of my mates online with PS3 and I wouldn't be getting any additional downloadable content either. It's a f**king done deal on 360. Simple as.
I may have a look at Haze. It's sounds kinda cool. I'm just reluctant to spend the time getting used to playing FPS on that cacky sixaxis controller... grrr... shoulder buttons for triggers... what absolute alfe...

But considering the length of time the 360 has been out, each console has virtual parity with numbers of game sold/ units shifted, regarding GTA4 at least. And until the dust settles you won't really know for real, eh? Early days. I don't think the DLC helped as much as they'd hoped...not initially.
As far as ESS KAY YOUs go: I'm convinced I didn't buy the right version. In fact I didn't buy both versions, but the PS3 version was definitely a better non-buy.

But with their huge (HUGE) install base of 360s, that's the only ratio they can acheive? 3:2?
Really they must be getting worried. USA is the only territory where 360 outsells PS3 now, and Sony're closing fast.
Ho hum

They've really pushed the boat out now. 360 = lead platform = better frame rates, better resolutions, anti-aliasing etc.

"PS3 GTA IV looks absolutely fantastic, and even factoring in zero anti-aliasing support and a lower resolution, in many scenarios it looks as good as the 360 version, if not better."
If not better.

BUT... if you digest the entirety of that article it makes it quite clear that the PS3 version is a 'PORT' of the 360 version, and that a combination of resolution limitation, HD caching and alterative rendering modes and filter effects makes deciding which version looks better merely a case of personal preference.
I will concede, based on this quite thorough evidence, that I prefer the warmer colours of the PS3 screenshots, but I'm reassured by the 360's higher framerate.
They also mention that the PS3 version could conceivably look better than it does... but I guess they ran out of time to work with PS3's less than conventional architecture....
Either way, it's almost like reading a Graphics Card Benchmarking review. There's that little in it...

Seems to be a few things people are choosing to ignore because the Marketing Train has pulled in with a carriage load of hookers.
Or something.

"Before I tell you what I think about this game, you should know two things: one, my biases in regards to this series, and two, that the average Metacritic score after 27 reviews is 99."
If this is a self inspired attempt at backlash then I'd like to argue that his arguments themselves are paper-thin.
His opening paragraph says to me he's being deliberately antagonistic, by going into ridiculous detail about what the MAJORITY OF THE WORLD would consider some minor hiccups.
And re-add me to your facebook FFS!

So if there are lots of things annoying him about it he's just supposed to shut up?
He's not trying to say the game doesn't have these incredible moments that you keep banging on about, but he's brave enough to point out the stuff that p**ses him off, something that not many others have had the stones to do.
Its called a BALANCED argument. Do you remember those?
Or did the hype fairy extract the concept from you when she left GTA4 under your pillow?

This bloke is a complete idiot. He seesm to think there is some end point for console design. After I read that the rest of his opinion was worthless.
Not true.
He was saying that those people that believe there is an end point for console design - and that this generation has already reached it - are wrong.
He was saying that those people that believe there is an end point for console design - and that this generation has already reached it - are wrong.
I don't think he's an idiot. A lot of what he's saying I have to agree with. It's just that having played it for twice as long as he mentions he has, for every ickle problem he's mentioned, I could name 20 things the game does well and/or exceeds my expectations.
True. It is most definitely a GTA game and many problems you might have had with the series to date are still present here. But it crosses so many boundaries you've been taught to accept in videogames that it cannot be regarded as anything less than a true modern classic. And a pop culture phenomenon to boot!

For a game with as many problems as GTA4 seems to have, its good points are only the same ratio as your bog standard well-made game, with far less problems.
And so it seems that the 10/10 score comes with a lot of justification and excuses. Weird...and unconvincing, imho.
Welcome to the world of the fanboy.
